Title: Soul Eater
Genre: action, comedy, drama, fantasy, adventure
Writer: Atsushi Okubo
Director: Takuya Igarashi
Studio: Bones
Format: 51 episodes
Dates: April 7,2008 - March 30,2009
Set in Death Weapon Meister Academy (DWMA), the series revolves around 3 groups of each a weapon meister and a human weapon. Trying to make the latter a "Death Scythe" and thus fit for use by the Shinigami, they must collect 99 kishin souls and 1 witch soul.
Soul Eater has a little bit of everything there is in anime. It has all kinds of characters like shinigami, zombie, crazy scientist, ninja, samurai, priest (at least Justin looks like one), vampire (Mosquito, right?), thief, pharaoh, immortal, frog, clowns, fairies, ghosts, pirates, spiders, mice, cats, witches and Excalibur? Plus, as far as I know in the anime world, it has its unique concept of the soul, meisters and weapons that can take human form. Furthermore, to make it more hilarious, they're given weird names like Dr. Franken Stein, Death the Kid, Ox Ford and many more.
I've never seen such dynamism and energy from any other anime. Soul Eater is just packed with "coolness" in many ways. At first, I thought it was going to take the path of similar anime shows like Naruto or D.Gray-man. Surprisingly, the relationship of the characters and pace of the story marked the distinction. I've only praised it so far but no anime is perfect. Wanting to fit everything in one show also has its disadvantages. There was always something lacking from each battle. I felt like they succeeded in building up the momentum for the fights but failed by ending it flat. The attacks are somehow monotonous and repetitive in every encounter.
I don't understand where Maka's concern for Crona comes from. Their battle ended poorly with Maka being all friendly with him. Everything else that followed with Crona in the picture turned out odd and pointless.
Going back to the characters, Soul Eater made a very good combination of personalities. Everyone has a good balance of pleasant and faulty traits.. Even the antagonists are nicely put together. Okay, I hate Excalibur but maybe his existence is essential so that the composition of characters wouldn't seem too ideal - or not. Most likely, he's just there to annoy the audience.
Three whole episodes dedicated to Excalibur ruins everything, therefore leading to an 8/10. But then again, I love the soundtrack so 8.5/10 is just right.
