The genres I like when it comes to anime is strangely different from the genres I like in books and movies.
"Horror" is not one of the categories I browse through when it comes to choosing a book nor a movie, but it is one of my favorite genres in anime.
I can't quite explain it, but there is just something about Japanese horror stories that make them unique from, say, Western-style horror. Japanese horror stories are not so much about blood and gore (though some are disturbingly gory) and supernatural creatures on a rampage. Japanese horror stories focus more on tortured souls in the form of quiet ghosts out for revenge.
Horror animes have some of the best stories and art. Though they are usually very violent, bloody and gory, most stories are complex and melancholy, usually involving some tragic loss or curse.
Another is a horror/mystery/thriller/suspense anime based on a novel by Yukito Ayatsuji. It is made up of 12 episodes and 1 OVA, which aired from January to March, 2012.
Another tells the story of Koichi Sakikabara, a middle school student who recently transfers to a public school in Yomiyama, Japan.
Through a series of strange and unfortunate events, Sakikabara learns that a strange and tragic curse has been placed on his middle school class and everyone who belongs to it. A curse which involves the death of members of the class and their families.

To break the curse, the class must follow a strict set of rules - rules that, being a transfer student, Sakikabara inadvertently breaks.
Another starts off slow, though I think it's perfect for setting up the mood of the story and developing the characters. Toward the end of the series, an abundance of information is revealed, not just about the curse, but also about one of the main characters, which help resolve the story.
What makes this anime so good isn't because of its fair share of violence, blood, and gore, but because of its carefully controlled story that is slowly unraveled throughout the series.
I recommend this anime not only for horror fans, but for anyone who loves a great mystery!
